Behold: Flin. Or F.L.I.N (still don’t know what the acronym stands for)… Flying uh, Lazy Indigenous Noodle. I’ll work on that.  My only inspiration here was that I wanted to created a simple tiny robot that could potentially be the hero of a future short film.  He still has a long way to go as far as texturing and realism, but he’s simple enough that he could be animated and given some personality.

WIP: (Character Design)

1 Dec

Unemployed life is was surprisingly busy! I’ve been spending a lot of time lately putting together portfolios and resurrecting old pieces, and sadly I didn’t finish the little robot character that I was starting to work out in my sketchbook above.

I’ve been doing more research about character design, and lo and behold, it’s not just a single drawing of a made-up character (blast)! So I wanted to do a full character sheet of poses, silhouettes, rotations, the whole enchilada, and I’m still planning on it. I just didn’t get it done amidst the other applications I’ve been working on.

Speaking of which, hey! I’m not unemployed anymore! I start working tomorrow at LAIKA animation studio, and I couldn’t be more excited. I hope that goes without saying, ’cause holy crap, I’m still freaking out about it! Fun fact, the director of Rapid Prototyping (dept. where I’ll be working) mentioned this blog in my interview! He was going over my portfolio beforehand and said it caught his interest. So go team! You’re awesome and helped me find a jæb!

Hopefully I’ll post the finished character sheet soon!

Fifty Robots Mostly!

30 Nov

Oh my heavens, oh my stars and garters look at all those fifty robots definitely. There sure are fifty of them down there! Wowee zowee, look at how fifty they are. I’ll explain that I cheated a bit this month in that I was already doing an assignment for my Digital Drawing class where I had to do a drawing a day for the whole term. So I chose this month’s theme so I wouldn’t have to do any more work, because I am a lazy busy man. And for the assignment, half of the drawings have to be in only black and white. So I did that. And since the term is almost over, I have below all fifty *cough* drawings that I needed to do. So there they are. I’ve provided a key at the bottom for those of youse who don’t know all these extremely obscure robuts.

Wir sind die Roboter

30 Nov

I originally planned on doing something based on old robot toys and their packaging, only to discover that I am absolutely horrible at drawing robots. I love drawing people and assumed some of that would carry over, and probably become even easier and more fun cos I’d be able to add springy arms or claws or weird-shaped bodies. Alas, no. Everything I produced was the pencil and paper equivalent of a foil-covered oatmeal box with juice caps hot-glued to the side. Which kind of seemed like the direction I’d have to embrace (and still seems like it would be fun to draw), until I remembered the music video for Die Roboter/The Robots by Kraftwerk and decided to combine it with my initial idea.

A Late Craigslist

4 Nov

Sorry this is late ^_^’ I have no amazing excuse besides: midterms and Halloween! Anyways I didn’t give myself much time for this and I don’t really use Craigslist at all sooo… This is all I could come up with while doodling in French class. When My german shepherd passed away a few years ago I decided that when I got another dog it would have to be a shepherd as well. When I went to look for puppies the only place I could think of to find them easily was Craigslist. Sadly most were out of my price range since they were pure bred-as this little doodle promptly states. Maybe someday I’ll get myself another shepherd…someday! 🙂

Hungry Hungry Robot

31 Oct

Dude, this is what happens when you try to buy a car AND a giant robot from craigslist!

So, one of my greatest challenges is deciding on one thing to draw and sticking with it. So I figured, why not try submitting one artwork for two different challenges? And thus, the prompt criteria for two different monthly art-sites The Ink Tank Engine and The 11 Second Club, provided enough creative constraint for me to develop one idea and see it through.

I definitely almost abandoned it many times over. It was a frustrating and painstaking process all for 11 measly seconds, but it was also super rewarding and taught me a lot about drawing in 3D space. Even as rough as it is. Unfortunately, I didn’t actually figure out the video encoding process quick enough to get it submitted to the 11 second club (they run on eastern time), so it’s exclusive to the Ink Tank Engine this time.

Also, I challenge you to think about this little green man the next time you play King’s cup.
