March 2014 prompt: Saucy

March 2014 prompt: Saucy

um … I don’t know who’s turn it is to make a prompt but I was procrastinating so I did! I thought this would be a good word because I’m reading Gone With the Wind, which features a rather saucy female protagonist and also because this week I discovered the delicious combination on curry and french fries.

The first thing I thought of when Michelle posted “spectacle” was the circus!  I’ve also been watching a lot of videos of this woman making “art journals”  and I was itching to cut up some paper and put it back together!  I also had all these frames I got for chrismas so I started with the smallest one, this circle’s about 3 inches in diameter.  and I made it out of scrap book paper!  Also his monocle is a little jewelry ring!

Dissonance in the Desert

Dissonance in the Desert

this picture turned out pretty cool considering I did it on late notice! A lot of the bits were inspired by my friends and also I had been thinking that it should have something related to the podcast “Welcome To Nightvale” (which you should definitely check out is you haven’t heard of it) The story depends on a lot of dissonant ideas so and I’d been listening to it a lot so I was glad I was able to get the desert feel as well as that bright fuschia color in the sound wave. Also the left foot purposely has six toes… to add to the strangeness…

a : lack of agreement; especially : inconsistency between the beliefs one holds or between one’s actions and one’s beliefs — compare cognitive dissonance
b : an instance of such inconsistency or disagreement
: a mingling of discordant sounds; especially : a clashing or unresolved musical interval or chord

So we just got back to school and it the first days back have been wonderful, it’s like we’re a family that has been separated against our will for the past three months, and the first day was like no time had past at all. Then as the days went on we began to feel the pull of little discrepancies, the changes that had happened in people’s lives over the summer, little changes like haircuts and weight loss, and bigger weirder unmentionable occurrences too. And while everything’s back to how it was in June, it’s also not. But nothing’s really interesting if it is always the way you know and love it to be and sometimes a little bit of dissonance can be intriguing and exciting. Dissonance can turn something that’s normally beautiful into something grotesque, or something plain into something stunningly gorgeous. So this month I’d like you to think about dissonance, maybe tweaking things out of the norm into something uncomfortable or maybe something better than before. For aural inspiration I’d like to provide you with a bit of Gypsy Jazz played by The Hot Club of San Francisco, who came to our school and performed and jamming concert last night. Jazz often uses dissonance to add spice to a song and while I don’t like spicy food I do like me some spicy music.

Chance: The Rainbow Rejection

30 Jun

So, first I got a piece of staff paper, some crayons and a hair dryer and made this:ImageThen I translated those splotches and blotches into parts based on each color of the rainbow, basing durations and pitches on the size and placement of the marks.ImageImageImageand here’s what it’s supposed to sound like!

There’s also an additional chance element in live performance where the lead player rolls a die in between to determine what order the stanzas are played in.  Also the parts can be played by any instrument in any clef.
