Penicuik Artist goes to the Battle of the Bands…

31 May

If you left your drawing to the last day, I did too. So no worries.

But! I did manage to develop a kind-of-cool idea, which had to do with this set of drawings I’ve been obsessed with lately. They’re called the Penicuik drawings, and the reason they’re so special is because they’re the only known visual documentation from an eyewitness of the Jacobite army in 1745 (the group I reenact). They were taken over a period of time in Edinburgh, a majority of them being done during the highlanders’ occupation of Edinburgh, shortly after the Battle of Prestonpans.

The drawings are largely caricaturish, and I’m quite taken to them so I thought I’d have a stab at making my own. Only, with modern subjects. So I whipped out my period sketchbook and porte-crayon, and had at it.

Where better to do this than at a music festival??

The moshing did happen, actually. I guess people do that when metal bands come on stage.

Anyhow, here are a couple scanned copies I have of the original drawings. Took note of some things, but perhaps I would do well to ink the ones I made.

On Tour

Today three teenagers of varying degrees of misfititude set off on their band’s very first national (3-state, assuming everything goes somewhat according to plan) tour. On guitar and vocals is Harper, the sort of bespectacled, serious boy indie rock nerd who divides his time between scribbling (mostly embarrassing) song ideas in the margins of books and listening to records alone in his room, doing nothing else but basking in musical genius. A year ago, after many songwriting experiments and bedroom Bright Eyes covers, he finally worked up the courage to ask the girl who once teased him mercilessly (for quietly singing along to “If You’re Feeling Sinister” that one time she sat next to him on the school bus) if she’d like to start a band with him. Olivia had been the drummer for a hardcore band until one day she showed up to practice to find she had been unceremoniously replaced. And as much as she enjoys teasing Harper about his favorite music, she’s glad to have a bandmate who is slightly afraid of her instead of condescending. Greg, the bassist, is a bit of a mystery in that Harper and Olivia still aren’t sure exactly what motivated him to ask to join the band (during math class, after eavesdropping on some stupid band argument, despite never really talking to either one of them before). Even though Greg wouldn’t be considered a popular kid in the traditional sense, he’s well-liked enough and has a large enough circle of friends to fall out of the outcasts-drawn-together-in-a-desperate-search-for-companionship-and-meaning narrative that the other two fall into. But he seems to genuinely enjoy being in the band and is happy moderating Olivia and Harper’s disagreements. They still don’t know too much of his personality besides him generally finding something to enjoy about most things. But since they’re about to spend weeks in close confinement within a gross, sweaty car, who knows what sort of strange new places their relationships will go?

So! I had a lot of fun drawing this (and I think this is the first drawing I’ve done here that isn’t just something floating on a plain/patterned background! Big steps!) but I’m not entirely happy with how the background/color palette turned out. I’d like for it to have more depth, while still being within my simplified drawing style. Lemme know if you have any suggestions!

Here’s what’s up, you lot!

Firstly, I can’t believe that we’ve made it all around the conductor-circuit already, this is awesome!! It’s such a joy for me to look back at our progress and entries up to this point, there’s really some spectacular work here and I can’t wait to see what’s to come!

Second, break out the shorts and sunscreen because SUMMER is on the way! (Sorry Elise, I don’t know what the weather is like in London right now but hopefully sunshine is in the plan somewhere)

In honor of doing things that are loose, fun, ambitious, and yet simultaneously carefree,  I have chosen the prompt of May 2013 to be

Whatever that means to you–go get ’em!

PS. Thank you all for making this one of my favorite places on the world wide web. You’re great!

That blasted TV show was pretty much my entire childhood. So it’s pretty much a given that I have to pay tribute, right…? Anyways, I have yet to give this guy a name, but he is a combination of Growlmon and Garurumon and I’m thinking he looks to be about at the Champion evolution stage.

I had a lot of fun going through the progression of the design and working to improve my painting skills in photoshop. I would love to hear any tips as well if anyone would like to share. I tried to get a third image done, but was unable to finish in time, yet again. Perhaps I’ll get to it later……….

Good luck to everyone with their studies and artistic endeavors. Summer is nearly here and hopefully I’ll be able to meet some of you all!
